A Recipe Each Day is Just What Your Blog Ordered

by Arika Lewis

If you’re like many mom bloggers, you may run out of things to talk about on occasion. Or maybe you just get tired and don’t feel like chatting some days, but you know you need an active blog if you’re going to make money — and many bloggers rely on their blog income to feed their families. So, how do you attract more readers and the search engines to your blog on a daily basis? Easy! Add a recipe of the day to keep your blog fresh and tasty. But, where do you find recipes that you can use? Before I tell you the answer, let’s get the legal stuff out of the way.

Recipes are not public domain. There are copyright laws that apply to recipes, especially the directions/instructions and collections. I recommend that you check google for “recipe copyright” to read the full story. Basically it states that recipes can be copyrighted, so you can’t just copy and paste them or type from a cookbook. That being stated, there are other (much easier) ways to get recipes that you can use on your blog.

Now let’s cover my favorite ways to find recipes that you can use on your mom blog.

Your Recipes

Do you have recipes that you make for your family? It could be meatloaf with a special ingredient or salsa with a twist. Take a look at all of the meals that you have personally invented (or altered).

If so, they are yours to publish as you wish. Enter them into your blog.

Aunts, Grandma & Friends

Do you have a collection of your mother’s or your grandmother’s recipes? How about your favorite aunt?

Start passing out blank recipe cards around the Thanksgiving dinner table to collect all of your family recipes. Then, hit up your co-workers and friends.

Hire a Writer

Another way to get recipes for your blog is to hire a ghostwriter to write them for you. This is a great way to save time and focus your energy elsewhere be it on your website, marketing efforts, or something else. Keep in mind that hiring someone will cost money. However, for most the cost is worth it when you look at the time and effort necessary to do it yourself. You’ll have more time to focus on other aspects of your business. Also, you can assign a project to a freelance writer and have it back quicker than you might on your own. You might check out elance.com or shelancers.com for starters.

Private Label Rights (PLR) Recipes

The fourth (and my personal favorite) way to get recipes for your blog is to purchase PLR recipes. The great thing about PLR recipes is:

You aren’t stuck coming up with all of the recipes yourself.

You don’t have to pay the big bucks for a writer.

You can change the recipes as much or as little as you’d like.

You can use and reuse the recipes as much as you’d like. You can even compile them into a downloadable cookbook that you can sell from your site.

You can buy PLR very cheap. Some PLR services sell their recipes and food articles for under $1.

Every PLR service has its own rules, so check it out before buying.

A final tip: I recommend that you edit your PLR recipes so they are unique. Some ways to do this are:

Rewrite the directions.

Make the title sound more interesting.

Add a suggestion for the reader. Perhaps recommend a great wine (or beer) for the meal or a side dish.

Now you know how very easy it is to add a recipe section to your blog. I hope you’ll consider getting started right away so you can attract hungry readers.
